Todays Tribeca Pick!

Defamation is a documentary that analyzes Anti-Semitism in our modern society and the global spectrum.

Tribeca Film Fest begins Today!

The Tribeca Film Festival located right here in the fabulous New York, NY opens today for a 10 day run of some exciting films! I'll have my daily pick right here.

The first film showcased and opened the Festival last night. Woody Allen, a NY staple, premiered
Whatever Works, about an eccentric New Yorker, played by Larry David, who leaves his cushy upper-class life to lead a more bohemian lifestyle. This comedy also stars Patricia Clarkson and Evan Rachel Wood.

Book Pick of the Week!

If you have never picked up Mary McCarthy's
The Group, I recommend doing so followed by the updated A Fortunate Age by Joanna Smith Rakoff. McCarthy writes a satirical portrait of six Vassar graduates from the 30s who move to Manhattan to pursue careers in the arts. The writing is vastly superior to the newcomer, but the updated version may appeal to those looking for something more time relevant. In Rakoff's similar version that focuses on Generation X, the characters are also postcollegiates who are trying to find their way and purpose while navigating the jungles of life and the city.

Tudors coming back for fourth season

Showtime has renewed the series The Tudors which centers around many times married King Henry VIII. The fourth and final season will come to us next spring with ten episodes to complete the tale of the King who failed to give England a male heir but propelled England into its magnificent Elizabethan era. Jonathan Rhys Meyers portrays Henry and the series has definitely added a lot of sex appeal to the character and the plot of the King's life. If you have never caught the series, I give a big recommendation to rent the first two seasons on DVD.

What to see this weekend....

If you are not running to the nearest theater to catch Hannah Montana The Movie because it just isn't really your thing, my recommendation is to try to catch The Mysteries of Pittsburgh opening Friday in limited release. The film is based on a novel by Michael Chabon which follows a young man recently graduated from college who defies his father's wishes and goes on a summer of self exploration within the city he thought he knew so well. Quality cast (stars Sienna Miller, Mena Suvari, Peter Saarsgard, Nick Nolte, and John Foster) and interesting trailer makes me think you wouldn't be wasting your time.

CW announces two new reality tv shows for the summer

I won't necessarily say that all reality tv should be canceled, after all at the end of the day it s a guilty pleasure for many. Alot of shows can be frivolous but fun, ala The Real Housewives Series or Rock of Love, while others just won't go away ala the not very real Hills or the overcontinued Real World. Which brings me to believe that if you are going to come up with a new reality tv show you better make it good...and the CW does not want to heed that advice. The shows premiering this summer Hitched or Ditched and Blonde Charity Mafia scream what is the network thinking?!

The premises are as follow:

Hitched or Ditched
premieres May 26th at 9pm and continues for a six episode run until the end of June. It follows couples who have been in long term relationships and were nominated by friends to be on the show because the friends feel the couples have been together so long they either need to get married or breakup. Hmm...I am tingling with the idea of the emotional turmoil that will displayed on our screens? Not really.

Blonde Charity Mafia or BCM as they are known in their city of Washington D.C. follows the lives of the most influential 20-something girls in this town. Basically you get to see them attend charity events, concerts, fashion shows, etc. Singlehandedly highlighting what our congressmen shouldn't be doing with thier time, BCM, makes me nervous for the future of America...a little extreme...but really? The show will premiere on July 7th at 9pm and run for six episodes until August 4th.

What to watch this weekend!

Gigantic opens this weekend in limited release and if a theater near you is playing it, definitely try to catch it. The film stars Paul Dano (crazy preacher boy turned homicide through bowling pin at the milkshake line in There Will Be Blood) as a young man who works in a furniture store and has a grand plan to adopt a baby from China. In comes Zooey Deschanel as a young woman who begins a romance with Dano's character Brian. John Goodman also graces the screen as Deschanel's character's father to round out an excellent cast.
